Coliving accommodation fills the gap between these expensive short term and cheaper long term options. They are better equipped for working from, have an enhanced focus in common spaces and facilities, are frequented by mostly people with the same interests, and offer unparalleled flexibility in stay duration and conditions. They are also usually located in interesting locations, where after-work activities can be pursued.
Not restricted to just nomads, this way of living is also popular with students, startup workers, and employees who regularly travel for work. This sudden popularity across the spectrum has led to drawing parallels with the proliferation of short-term holiday rentals. In Andalucia, it is sometimes felt that the use of this anglicism is only meant to make it sound 'cool' to disguise the fact that people cannot afford to rent their own place and are being forced to share with others.
Investment on the rise
Nevertheless, investment in this type of properties has increased rapidly. In the first half of 2023, investment in co-living spaces reached close to €75 million and the number of beds available has quadrupled in the last three years. This has positively helped bring rental prices somewhat lower, stopping their frenetic rise of recent years. Coupled with the added facilities of coliving spaces, like cleaning services, game rooms, kitchen, gym, and others, this investment seems likely to increase further.
