Spain boasts an enviable telecommunications network, where fiber optic coverage of speeds of more than 100Mbps reaches 88 percent of the population. The 660,000 Spanish homes that do not yet have an internet connection of any type will be connected via the €200 million "Next Generation" recovery plan funded by the European Union.
How do I check a region's fiber optic coverage?
The Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Department of the Spanish government has issued a fiber optic map that you can use interactively to determine the suitability of a certain area to teleworking. A screenshot for the Andalucia region is shown in this article.
In Andalucia, 78.5 percent of the homes are connected to a broadband service. The best connections are available along the coast, but also in the capitals of each Andalusian province. Much of the space in between is sparsely populated, as is also the case in the rest of Spain, and therefore you would do well to check the map before committing to visit as a digital nomad. While this is set to improve the situation in many areas over the next three years, there are still many places in Spain where internet companies won’t be able to reach.
