The people of Córdoba in Andalucia, welcome guests into their private courtyards in May to be amazed by their elaborate flower arrangements. It honours the exceptional inner courtyard decorations and is listed on UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Residents display their patios, decorating them with vibrant flowers, verdant plants, and fountains. They also compete to design the most beautiful patio, winning a reward.

In a celebration of spring, dozens of typically private patios are opened to the public in a flood of vibrant colors. Most owners are delighted to show off their beautifully designed patios and are willing to talk with you about their artistic endeavors. Some patio owners may even invite you into what seems like a private party by serving drinks and refreshments. The public squares are transformed into festive spaces across the city in the evening, complete with plenty of lights, live music, dancing, outdoor restaurants, and drink vendors.

The Córdoba Patios Festival dates back to 1921, when the then mayor, Francisco Fernández de Mesa opened the Patios, Balconies and Shop Windows Contest for the first time, along with music, dancing and wine. In subsequent years, the festival grew bigger and bigger and the competition grew in intensity too with bigger monetary prizes being awarded to the winners.

This year, the festival will be held from Thursday May 2nd to Sunday 12th. All of the patios will be free to enter and there will be no need to book in advance.
